Brady is a Brooklyn-based, Cajun-bred screenwriter/producer hailing from south of where you think Louisiana ends. He’s created the web series Porn for the Blind (pilot currently in post-production) and wrote the recent short films “Bygones,” “Settling Up,” “Hashshashin,” “Mnemonia,” and “Zugzwang,” all of which will soon be available for your ecstatic viewing pleasure.

What was the inspiration for your project?
The idea of someone who donated sperm countless times and then, years later, encounters those children has been in the back of my mind for a long, long time. But for most of that marination time, I thought the father of these kids was a hermit trying to dodge being discovered. I saw it as a big Altman-esque ensemble piece with a dozen middle-aged test-tube spawn tracking down a sneaky old man. Then it occurred to me to flip it — that the father is tracking down the children. The art-world milieu and characters and plot of the pilot came almost entirely fully formed at that moment. I wrote it in under a month, and all the details that came during that two-minute flood of inspo have pretty much remained intact (though the third act has changed quite a bit).

How has the Filmshop community contributed to the development of your project?
Filmshop has been central to my growth as a writer and filmmaker over the last two years. With this project, in particular, I got a lot of great feedback from the Monday Brooklyn (MoBro) chapter, especially with the pitch deck. Seeing my fellow Filmshoppers confidently galloping into the big bad world with finished projects and pitch decks at the ready has done a good job of lighting a creative ass-fire. I think without that energetic inspiration, I might still be tooling around without showing off my wares to the world.

What do you feel is your greatest challenge moving forward?
Currently, I’m looking for management with the hope of moving into full-time TV writing and/or screenwriting so I can devote myself fully to the craft. For this project, in particular, I am combing through a list of producers with similar projects and anyone close to Jeff Goldblum, whom I’ve had in mind to play Leonard Kralik since the beginning.

What are you most looking forward to getting out of your Breakthrough experience?
I’m excited to see my script — or at least a chunklet of it — read by actors for an audience. As a screenwriter, it’s hard to get those informative moments of audience interaction with the work. I’m also looking forward to seeing the great work from my fellow Breakthrough screenwriters, Craig and Paavo.
