Logline

After disturbed humans begin mutating into horrific monstrosities and plunge the world into a state of paranoid repression, a cynical film crew braves social chaos and monster-worshipping cultists in a search for answers.

Synopsis

In a near-future where a curse has caused humanity to mutate into horrific monstrosities if their emotions overwhelm them, people are forced to wear Personality Compatibility Index devices. These A.I. devices monitor people's emotional compatibility and facilitate communication at the cost of keeping individuals' emotions repressed and inter-personal relationships stunted. Art and self-expression has all been censored and discouraged and people are guided into "useful" occupations.

Jayce works as a clean-up man, tidying up the grotesque aftermath of these transformations but yearns to pursue an artistic career. Stuck in a dead-end job and desperate to connect, he sees his chance to live out his dream when Maddie, a young and brash student offers him the opportunity to do something truly dangerous, express himself in her documentary. Maddie is looking for answers about the truth behind the curse and believes that the grisly scenes left behind after monster attacks may hold the answers.

Jayce and Maddie delve deeper into the origins of the curse and along the way discover revelations that put them in the crosshairs of a doomsday cult. It becomes clear to Jayce that Maddie is more interested in the access Jayce provides than in his story.

As the danger begins to mount Jayce is torn between his desire for self-preservations or fulfilling his life's ambition of making art and truly connecting with someone.

Additional Project Information

I'm passionate about making this movie about a group of characters desperate to connect. I've always loved the creature-feature and monster movie genre and especially when it served as a poignant way to satirize and criticize society. Using Godzilla as a point of inspiration (both the original and Shin Godzilla) I asked myself what today's nuclear weapon was. It struck me that we aren't afraid of a mysterious foreign threat or concept anymore, what we're most scared of now are our neighbors. Specifically, we are scared to interact and disagree with each other, we're scared that if we learn too much about our neighbors they'll become monsters in our eyes or we'll become monsters in theirs. That was the basis for my movie, a world where anyone can become a monster if we learn too much about them. I wanted technology to play a role in this story. Technology has a way of hindering our ability to communicate under the guise of helping. With A.I. assisted communication on the rise and our mistrust of each other only growing, I feel like this movie is my way of connecting and sharing my feelings, a terrifying prospect! My friend has a media company in Norway and he liked my script so he quoted me 100,000 usd for locations/crew/background and a rough assembly of the film.
