Experience the magic of Filmshop’s vibrant summer residency on Governors Island! Throughout the season, the Filmshop House will buzz with activity, featuring film screenings, filmmaker Q&As, and hands-on workshops led by our talented community members. Highlighting our residency will be a retrospective exhibition showcasing Filmshop’s evolution and impact over the years.
This residency offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in filmmaking, learn from industry professionals, and be inspired by the creativity of our Filmshop community. Whether you’re an aspiring filmmaker, film enthusiast, or simply curious about the art of cinema, our program promises something special for everyone.

May 17: House Opening and Filmshop Picnic
June 22 | Docshop Day: Join Filmshop's Docshop community for a summer day of conversation and fun on June 22nd on Governors Island to mark our 5th anniversary! Save your spot HERE.
June 29 | Empathy in Filmmaking + CANS Can’t Stand Screening: A Doc Weekend workshop on ethical storytelling, followed by a powerful screening amplifying Black trans resistance during Pride and BLM Month. Save your spot HERE.
July 12 | Generative Poetry Workshop: Writing to Silent Films: A creative workshop where we’ll watch silent film clips and write poems inspired by the visuals. Open to all creatives, this session will explore the intersection of film and poetry! RSVP HERE.
July 12 | Exhibition Opening: "Artists' Ways" by Patrice D. Bowman
Patrice D. Bowman's debut photo & video exhibition was inspired by The Artist's Way. Experience her stunning photo series and engage in lively discussions about art, collaboration, and identity. RSVP HERE.

August 9 | Cut. Color. Paste. Contemplate: A mixed media workshop with featured artist Jessica Rechner. RSVP HERE.
August 16 | Cyanotype Workshop: Create alternative photo prints with Patrice D. Bowman + Dylan Castagnette. RSVP HERE.
August 17 | Character Studies: A Photography Workshop: Join filmmaker Patrice D. Bowman for a photography workshop that explores character, portraiture, and visual storytelling. RSVP HERE.
August 30 | 11 AM - 5 PM: Into the Archives: A Co-Presentation with MIX NYC
Dive deep into protest films, oral history recordings, and archival discussions on building personal archives. RSVP HERE.
August 31 | 11 AM – 5 PM (Talkback at 3 PM): “Artists’ Ways” Closing Reception
Celebrate the final day of the Artists’ Ways exhibit with curator Patrice D. Bowman and her collaborators for a lively talkback and closing gathering. RSVP HERE.
September 28 | 2 PM – 3 PM: Weaving: Hybrid Screening & Talk: A live screening and talk featuring filmmaker Hsuan Yu Pan and artist Ludmila Christeseva. Part of "Healing Arts" campaign (a WHO collab). RSVP HERE.
October 4 | 2 - 4 PM: Open Water Screening & Talkback: A screening of the indie film classic "Open Water." Talkback to follow with director Chris Kentis, moderated by Nina Gielen. RSVP HERE.
October 5 | 2 PM – 4 PM: Toon Gulch: Spooky Animation Edition: Animation showcase featuring 6 artists at Filmshop House. Discover diverse animated works in an intimate setting. RSVP HERE.
October 11 | 2 PM – 3 PM: Robots Aren’t Us: This short film block explores what makes us human—and what happens when we’re replaced, serviced, or bossed around by something that isn’t. Join us at the Filmshop House on Governors Island for an afternoon of thought-provoking sci-fi shorts that question the boundaries between humans and machines. RSVP HERE.
October 19 | 2 PM – 4 PM: “Game On” + “Heart of Neon” Screening & Game Design Workshop: Join filmmakers Paul Docherty and Theresa Loong for a free screening, discussion, and hands-on game design workshop at the Filmshop House on Governors Island. Explore the intersection of storytelling and play through clips from Heart of Neon and Game On. RSVP HERE.
October 25 | 3 PM – 4:30 PM: Autumn in New York: Join Filmshop during Pumpkin Point for the live performance debut of Lemon Tap, a duo performing a set of jazz covers at the Filmshop House on Governors Island. Celebrate the season with music, community, and fall vibes. RSVP HERE.
All workshops are free and for all ages, with a suggested donation to support the artists.
Silent Writing: Our sunlit upstairs rooms are reserved for silent writing on Sundays from 11 AM - 5 PM. Grab a partner, grab some paper, pick a prompt from our idea bucket if you need help getting started, and get to work!
Lending Library: Feel free to take or add a book, drawing, clothing, film equipment, etc., to our free library located on the first floor of the house.
