Logline
When Este, a rebellious young witch, moves to a mysterious isle with her twin brother, she’s seduced to the dark side by demon-worshipping teens, led by the ethereal Mayor’s daughter, Cryssa.
Synopsis
Este and Pruitt are orphan twin witches. When they inherit a house on the New England isle of Chrysocolla, they discover a toxic, materialistic culture where the locals care more about property value than their own children. The teens, in retaliation, act out by worshipping a demon that allegedly haunts the isle. When Este learns that her mother is connected to the isle, she goes undercover with the rebel teens to learn more. It looks harmless, until Este discovers they’re secretly killing the adults, sacrificing them to the “demon.” Pruitt wants to leave, but Este, an anarchist, is tempted by their destructive chaos. Not to mention she’s falling for one of the rebels, Cryssa, the Mayor’s daughter. Fractured from her twin, Este learns the demon is real, the source of her family’s magic. Succumbing to her fate, Este becomes a rebel and kills the Mayor. With the Mayor dead, the teens take over the isle, massacring the adults. But Este has a magical vision, and discovers her mother didn’t worship the demon. She resisted it. Este regrets her actions, but now must choose between Cryssa and Pruitt. Cryssa wants her to sacrifice Pruitt to summon the demon. Tempted, Este ultimately chooses family, saving Pruitt. When the teens summon the demon through other means, Este and Pruitt use their magic to fight it together. But they’re no match. The demon is about to kill Este when Cryssa defeats the demon, saving her. Despite being on different ideological sides, their love perseveres.
Additional Project Information
I love writing colorful, queer stories about destruction and hope. It’s an inherent queer experience to take in the bad with the good, living a life of contrast. As I’m discovering my genderfluid identity and how deep it goes, writing this script helped me connect with my feminine side, a part of me that never got to come out until recently. I have been raised and molded by incredible women in my life, and I’ve always thought women deserve to be angrier. They’re always holding everything together while men have the audacity to call them “emotional,” meanwhile they’re the ones having temper tantrums, wrecking the world, bringing everyone down with them. This script is a space where women can feel the rage they rightfully deserve in a way that validates them, but also fuels catharsis and resolution. It points to hope, to a brighter future even amongst the flames. My aim is to find a woman director, ideally a queer woman, to bring this screenplay to life and direct authentic performances with the actors. Making this film is about fostering a community of marginalized folks banding together, fighting for a better world. In a moment where everyone is frustrated but stuck, over-burdened by the struggle to stay afloat, this story is more pertinent than ever.
