Visionary artist Minga Opazo transforms discarded textiles into living works of art using the power of fungi. With textile waste becoming a global crisis, could her innovation pave the way for a sustainable revolution in textile recycling?
Synopsis
Artist Minga Opazo is a fourth-generation textile artist who explores the relationship between climate change, contemporary textile production, and Chilean textile history and design. Born in Chile, Minga immigrated to Los Angeles at the age of 16. In her practice, she examines the textile industry and creates art that exposes, reflects, and seeks solutions to the textile waste crisis. For context, the EPA estimates that in 2018, 11.3 million tons of textile waste was generated and sent to landfills. Driven by her passion for sustainability, Minga began exploring the potential of mycoremediation as a possible solution for textile waste.
Through Minga’s work and her ongoing collaboration with scientific researchers, this feature length documentary explores how art and artists can find creative and powerful solutions that have the potential to fundamentally reshape our relationship with our world. Additionally, this project will highlight the impact potential when science and art collaborate to engender change.
Beyond the overarching themes of art, science, and the environment, the project will incorporate Minga’s personal story, highlighting themes of immigration and the exploration of craft arts. It will also address the historical perception of craft as “women’s work,” which has contributed to its lower status in the art world. Minga’s Chilean background is specifically relevant to this project as Chile is one the countries that receives millions of pounds of textile waste from around the world. The film will explore the history of textile production and textile waste to incorporate this global element into the story.
