Logline
Conversations with Exes is a hybrid documentary film that examines the director’s broken patterns of queer love and desire through interviews with former romantic partners and scripted re-enactments.
Synopsis
In this documentary-fiction hybrid film, the director, Jess, turns the camera on herself and dissects her multiple failed relationships. The film is divided into Four Acts, following different relationships from beginning to end, each represented by its theme: First Love, Passionate Love, Everlasting Love, and Hurt People Hurt People. Within each act, there is an interview, a monologue, and a re-enactment to review pivotal moments from each relationship, deconstructing and repairing with each next encounter. With added commentary from her mother and grandmother, Jess’s arc evolves from naivety about love to becoming a harbinger of hurt, sparking a new need to find a romantic escape from herself.

Conversations with Exes will be my first feature film, and as I identify as a genre-fluid filmmaker who loves to experiment with different film forms, this would be a penultimate moment for me artistically and professionally. This film is a personal story that doesn’t shy away from vulnerability. A personal film, but also universal. Now is especially the time to tell humane stories about people who are marginalized within a society, especially politically, as much of the world turns towards far-right identity and values.
The most important concept that we seek and are fed to us is the idea of love. Finding a romantic love that will “complete” or “give life meaning” has been a media-created obsession that should be interrogated. Especially now, where there is severe disconnection and disparity between people, finding it hard to connect with not just intimate partners, but friends, and a community.
As we continue to interact in a world during “the loneliness epidemic,” and critique social norms, it’s important for stories about love and vulnerability to be a part of the conversation. Media and society have reared us to prize romantic love, but not given us the proper tools & skills to communicate, be vulnerable, and understand how to talk about love, including how the intersections of identity affect our views on love. As a Black queer masculine of center woman, our desires and perspectives are often invisible in society, even within the structures of homosexual society influenced by the concept of patriarchy and whiteness. No matter what part of the intersection, being black or queer goes from being eroticized to being erased. Through this personal exploration of love and communication, I hope to inspire discussion on how we all approach relationships (platonic and intimate). Through interviews with family members and old flames, I investigate how internal and external influences in our lives, from growing up in a Caribbean household to the media we ingest about ourselves.
I have pitched this project at Ji.hlava New Visions Forum in 2025.
