Logline

After six strangers are abducted by an extraterrestrial entity and imprisoned in an isolated farmhouse, they must work together to make their escape. But when a mysterious alien orb starts to alter their perception of reality, they are forced to face their fears – and each other – in order to make it out alive.

Synopsis

Alone in the woods with a shotgun to his throat, Ray is abducted by a UFO.
The next day, Ray finds himself trapped by an invisible barrier in a rural house with Maya, Henry, Imelda, Carl, and Delilah – all fellow UFO abductees. They’ve tried everything to break the barrier, but nothing works – they can’t escape, and they’re short on food.
When a mysterious orb manifests in the basement, its energy field debilitates Maya, who is saved by Ray and Imelda. While the others make a bomb to blast through the barrier, Maya and Ray realize the orb has connected them telepathically; exploring the orb’s significance and their psychic bond, they become close and make love. Maya, Ray, and Imelda deduce the orb is their way out, while Henry presses Ray for gunpowder for the bomb, which Ray hides, distrusting Henry.
After Delilah switches sides, they realize all six of them must escape together via the orb. Time running out, Carl joins the orb faction as a spy for intel on the gunpowder, but telepathic cacophony takes hold, and they discover they must synchronize themselves to escape. Ray confides he no longer plans to kill himself, thanks to this newfound connection.
When paranoid Henry attempts to blow up the orb with the bomb, a fight ensues, and he is psychically activated. Fully synchronized, they all reach the orb together and, after a psychedelic experience, return to reality, freed.
Years later, Maya and Ray psychically view the world through their child’s eyes.

Additional Project Information

Metanoia is a prayer for cosmic salvation by way of a sci-fi thriller feature film.
When we meet Ray, he is on the verge of suicide, the ultimate act of disconnection. Like all the characters in the movie, he feels alone, separate from others – just as so many of us feel today. When a UFO stops him in the act, Ray is teleported to a house with five fellow abductees, trapped inside by an unbreakable force field. Their only options for escape are to build a bomb to blast through the barrier, or engage with an alien orb that awakens a sixth sense in all who go near it, connecting them to each other on a psychic level. Their choice becomes: take the familiar road, risking mutually assured destruction, or venture into the unknown via the painful process of growth.
Like our characters, the world is itself trapped in a vicious cycle of self-destruction. The impulse of too many is to destroy what they don’t understand, out of fear. Can we break the surface into a higher level of understanding? Or is cosmic intervention our only hope? As our characters’ perception of reality begins to shatter, they ultimately experience “metanoia” – a profound shift in consciousness. With this movie, I hope the same for my audience. I hope that they consider that there is no individual without the other, that perhaps each one of us is merely an expression of a greater unified whole – if only we could see it.
