Artists’ Ways: A Photo & Video Exhibition by Patrice D. Bowman (Plus Work by Featured Artists)
Filmshop House, Governors Island
July 12 – August 31, 2025
Join us at the Filmshop House for the debut solo exhibition of filmmaker and FSer, Patrice D. Bowman!
Artists’ Ways is a powerful photo and video series inspired by Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way. Through intimate portraits, Bowman captures the creative rituals of her fellow New York-based artists, offering a layered exploration of identity, collaboration, and the personal process of making art. Each image invites us into the artist’s space, mid-creation.
The exhibit also includes works by the featured artists, thus building a conversation between the photographer and her subjects.
This exhibition is an act of community and a reminder that artistic growth is rarely solitary. As a result, please join us for several exhibit-inspired workshops on various creative practices in August.

Artist’s Statement
During a challenging time in 2025 -- for personal, professional, and artistic reasons -- I decided to re-read a book that helped me in the past: The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron.
The Artist's Way consists of 12 chapters (as a 12-week course) that help people work through their blockages — in art, in work, and in life. Through reading the book for a second time and completing its writing exercises, I felt inspired.
I’ve been a filmmaker for 10 years; I’m a director, colorist, assistant editor, and editor. I’ve been an educator for almost 5 years; I teach filmmaking workshops at organizations and at universities. But, as I read The Artist's Way, I became motivated to do something I’ve never done before: create a photo-series.
I’ve photographed before; I’ve captured events and did some street photography. But I didn’t do much creative portraiture.
That's why my exhibit “Artists’ Ways” exists.
For years, I've been blessed to work with and to know many talented artists in New York. With their time, spaces, and creative input, I was able to photograph them engaging in their work. Through this process, it really made me think deeper about art, collaboration, and the crafting of identity/identities in front of the camera.
In addition, accompanying this exhibit is another one that displays some of the wonderful works from the artists themselves (in the next room).
I hope you enjoy the experience and feel inspired. I sure did!
